Whether you’re headed to the mountains for a camping trip or a weekend in the big city, it’s important to know how to prepare for a road trip if you want your travels to go smoothly. So, what should you do before hitting the road? Here are some key road trip tips.

Taking Care of Your Tires

Your tires are one of the most important components of your vehicle. Not only do they help you safely navigate the roads, but well-maintained tires generate better fuel economy while delivering a smoother driving experience. We recommend taking a look at your tires to assess wear and tear. Do you notice any punctures? Do you see lots of debris? Does the tread look a little lower than you remember? If your tread depth is less than 2/32 of an inch, get new tires.

Neglecting tire maintenance can lead to poor performance and even flat tires on your road trip. Consider an inspection at your local service center. If it’s been awhile, rotating and aligning your tires can go a long way toward a safer driving experience!

Watching the Weather

It’s important to keep an eye on the weather in both your hometown and destination before you head out for your great adventure. While your destination may have sunshine, what if you run into stormy weather on the way? Be sure to anticipate the weather by making sure your car can handle unforeseen road conditions. Take a good look at your windshield wipers to make sure they function properly and replace them if you notice any damage. If you’re driving somewhere cold, consider scheduling service to winterize your car for the snowy conditions. On the flip side, if you’re driving somewhere warm, read up on how to keep your car cool during the summer.

Anticipating Emergencies

When preparing for a road trip, no one wants to think about emergencies on the road, but the best way to prevent worry is to prepare for the worst. A good all-purpose emergency kit can save you tons of stress later on. You can purchase a pre-made kit at most dealerships, or you can make your own customized kit. Here are a few items you might want to pack:

  • Jumper cables, in case your car won’t start
  • Cell phone charger or power bank to recharge a dead battery
  • Flares or reflective triangles to signal for help
  • Blankets, ice scrapers, and sand for winter weather
  • Extra maps in case you lose your GPS signal
