Nothing makes up for filling out a tax return like getting a nice juicy return, and the IRS says most are issued relatively quickly. But if you’re still waiting after 21 days and your return contained no errors, there are several ways to track your tax refund. You can:

  • Check the IRS website
  • Call the IRS
  • Use the IRS2Go app

Whether you need to check your tax return status or have started asking “Where’s my tax refund?”, use the following steps to move forward.

Check the IRS Website

The IRS makes tracking your tax refund as easy as logging on to their “Where’s my Refund?” page. You should be able to find out where in the system your return is within 24 hours of the agency receiving your e-filed tax return. If you used the mailman, you need to wait four weeks before tracking.

Of course, you’ll need a few things, including:

  • Your social security number
  • The filing status of your return
  • The exact amount you’re expecting
  • Name and tax ID of the spouse shown first on the return (for joint-return filers)

Call the IRS

Don’t have access to a computer? Prefer using the good old-fashioned telephone? No problem — you can still call the IRS directly to track down your refund. Just call 1-800-829-1954 and have a copy of your return at hand. You should also have a pen and paper to jot down any additional instructions or follow-up phone numbers.

The only issue with calling is that you’ll have to wait:

  • Three weeks after e-filing
  • Six weeks after snail-mailing

Use the IRS2Go App

The IRS2Go app is the agency’s own smartphone application. Available for free download on Apple and Android devices, it lets you track your tax refund with ease. Of course, you’ll still need:

  • Your social security number
  • The filing status on your return
  • The exact amount you’re expecting
  • Name and tax ID of the spouse shown first on the return (for joint-return filers)

You can also sign up for IRS tax updates and use the contacts section to find any number or assistance center you may need.

Why Not Use Your Refund to Buy a Used Car?

After asking ‘where’s my tax refund’, you’ll start asking yourself what to actually use it for. Shopping for a used vehicle is a good idea since your refund can become the down payment. Find your local CarHop location to take advantage of Buy Here Pay Here financing.
