Here’s a great story from Matt B. who has worked for CarHop a little over 10 years now. He recently shared this personal story that mades him feel good about working with CarHop.
From Matt B.
“In the winter of 2004, I was visiting one of the Minneapolis stores and a young lady, her fiancé and their 10-month-old baby were negotiating a car purchase. They were having a very hard time deciding whether or not to buy the car, after all it’s a big decision.
Just before they were about to leave, I explained to the manager that I felt it was unsafe to put them back out into the frigid cold. (For those of you not from the north, Minneapolis can get REALLY, REALLY cold; it was dangerously cold that night.) I was afraid there was a big chance of having them wind up on the side of the freeway as they drove their old jalopy back home. Their little baby was too cute to risk that, so we were going to try everything to make sure it didn't happen. Preston, our manager, talked with them and they ended up purchasing a Chevy Lumina that night. And now the rest of the story...
Several months later, I was back in town and in desperate need of a haircut. I remembered the lady and the Lumina and her baby. She was a hair stylist nearby so I went to get a haircut from her. To my surprise she remembered me and she started to tell me what that purchase had done for her and her family.
She explained with examples and details how previously she, her fiancé and their baby would park 1-2 blocks away so they could walk to where they were going and nobody would see them in their old car. Having seen that jalopy, I knew she wasn't embellishing! Trips to the mall, to restaurants, to events, even to family gatherings and friends houses - they were embarrassed to be seen in their old car. As she spoke about how those days were in the past and how they no longer needed to circle their destination looking for a secluded and hidden parking spot, her confidence, self-esteem and pride came bubbling over in every word. She was certain that the car purchase had really done a lot more for them than just get them a safer car. It gave them a renewed sense of confidence and determination to take into everyday life as they went forward as a family. I was moved by this unsolicited revelation. I had seen the impact our company has had on peoples' lives, but I hadn't really thought too much about how people were benefiting in some of the ways that she had referenced – confidence and self-esteem.”
Thanks for that great story, Matt and keep of the good work!
